AUGUST 2008 DEVOTION
I recently spent time with my brother and his family in Pennsylvania. His almost three year-old son, Bo, gave me a fresh picture of our relationship with God. I have only been around Bo two or three times in his short life, so he doesn't know me very well. Even though I am raising five children of my own, I was still nervous about babysitting him – 2 ½ year olds are unique! The first day he was understandably very cautious with me. I was thrilled that his tears disappeared quickly after his mom left and he settled down for breakfast comfortably. As the day went on and I changed his diapers, played with him in the pool, and put him down for his nap, he was obviously more and more at ease with me. By my last day there he easily shared giggles, kisses, and hugs. What a joy! I miss him!
Our relationship with the Lord is often similar. If we do not spend time with Him we don't know Him well and are therefore very cautious and unsettled with Him. As we trust Him with more and more of our daily life His presence becomes expected and welcome. As we get to know Him better through His Word, prayer, and fellowship, we find ourselves laughing and enjoying Him more than we ever imagined. I probably won't see Bo again until Thanksgiving :( but we never have to experience time away from God. In Matthew 28:20 Jesus said, I am with you always" and He meant it for all His disciples - including you!
I pray you will enjoy God and get to know Him better this month and always!
Let's pray. Father, thank You for the privilege of knowing You! Please help us to trust You a little more each and every day and develop a relationship with You that is strong and fun! In Jesus' Precious Name we pray. Amen.
