Servant Leadership

·         Jesus was servant of all

·         Mark 9:35 - Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, "If anyone wants to be first, he must be the very last, and the servant of all."

·         Mark 10:43 - Not so with you.  Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant,

·         Mark 10:45 - For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.

·         Focus on being a servant first, the leadership and authority will follow.

Serving in the Workplace

·         Don't do their job - servant leadership is not doing someone else's job

·         Do your job - serving someone is doing your job in the context of their job needs (Know their needs)

·         Dimensions of Relationships

·         Work level of interaction - co-workers

How can I help you is a great question to ask co-workers, etc.

·         Personal level of interaction - Human Aspect

-    Pay attention to people

-    Get to know them - customers, suppliers, vendors

-    Share values with people in non-coercive way

-    Family is more important than their jobs

-    Who you are - communicate that by being real

-    The whole person shows up at work

Servant First Leadership

·         Apply these principles to employees, boss, co-workers, customers

·         Boss Example

-    How can I help you?  How are you doing?  What can I take off your plate that would free up some time for you?

·         Co-worker Example

-    How can my department be beneficial to you?  Are we providing you with materials that make your job easier?  Is the spreadsheet in the right format for you and your team?

·         Customer Example

-    Is there a better way for us to distribute our product to you?

-    Are there any suggestions you have for making our invoice easier to understand?

-    Be creative in the ideas above.

The Rule of the Righteous Person

·         2 Samuel 23:1-4 (David's last words)

NIV Translation

These are the last words of David:

"The oracle of David son of Jesse,

the oracle of the man exalted by the Most High,

the man anointed by the God of Jacob,

       Israel's singer of songs [a] :

 "The Spirit of the LORD spoke through me;

his word was on my tongue.

  The God of Israel spoke,

the Rock of Israel said to me:

'When one rules over men in righteousness,

when he rules in the fear of God,

he is like the light of morning at sunrise

       on a cloudless morning,

       like the brightness after rain

that brings the grass from the earth.'

The Message Translation

These are David's last words:

The voice of the son of Jesse,

the voice of the man God took to the top,

Whom the God of Jacob made king,

      and Israel's most popular singer!

  God's Spirit spoke through me,

his words took shape on my tongue.

The God of Israel spoke to me,

      Israel's Rock-Mountain said,

   "Whoever governs fairly and well,

      who rules in the Fear-of-God,

Is like first light at daybreak

without a cloud in the sky,

   Like green grass carpeting earth,

      glistening under fresh rain."

·         When you read this passage, the word that summarizes it is "refreshing."

·         Questions for us as workplace believers - Are others refreshed by our presence in the workplace?  Are others stressed by our presence in the workplace?  Are we refreshing others by our actions and conduct at work?

Bill was asked to define righteousness:

·         Making decisions that are not political, expedient, or for your own gain.  To be right when others compromise.  Being real in the context of integrity, grace, and consistency.

·         The words he was using to define righteousness came out of lessons he learned in the workplace and what God has poured into him.

·         Integrity, fairness, treating people right even when that means having to let someone go, not doing things for your own glory, making hard decisions but done in such an above board way that even those who are negatively affected understand and respect the decision.

Closing Remarks

·         Be real, be who we really are – integrity.

·         Servant leadership is a process - we never arrive, but we need to be growing more like Christ in our servant leadership.

·         It is a journey to live out with Christ working in us and through us.
