OCTOBER 2009 DEVOTION
"...in everything...prayer...it was good of you to share in my troubles..." Philippians 4:6, 14
At times I get extremely overwhelmed by the many heartaches in the world: from national wars, famines, and needs, to local and individual crises and pain. I want to help but feel completely inadequate. As I have sought the Lord's wisdom about these conflicts in my heart, He has revealed two very important principles to me:
1. Prayer is never a waste of time or effort and always makes a difference even when we don't see the results.
2. No one can help everyone, but anyone and everyone can help someone.
With those two lessons firmly in my life, the Lord has given me opportunities to send Bibles and study materials to people in India, Kenya, and Nigeria recently and encourage them via email. He has led me to send cards to hurting friends’ right here in town and to be especially available to my youngest daughter who is currently on crutches. He has called our Bible study to intercede in a very serious way for our nation and its leaders and has put it on my heart to send another shoe box or two with the Samaritan's Purse project.
While I certainly don't feel like I am changing the world, the Lord assures me that every prayer prayed and activity accomplished in His Name and for His glory will make a difference. I simply must trust in Him, continue to listen, and keep moving forward.
How is God calling you to make a difference in someone's life today? Who can you pray for or provide physical support to? You can't do everything, but you can do something. Why not ask the Lord for His guidance today? If each one of us reaches out, eventually all will be reached. Yeah Jesus!
Let's pray. Father, we come with a desire to make a difference wherever YOU decide! Please lead and guide us, Lord, that the whole world will experience Your love and grace and mercy. Thanks for letting us be a part! In Jesus' Precious Name we pray. Amen.
