SEPTEMBER 2008 DEVOTION
Jesus loved using small things to make a big impact. In John 6:9 He used small loaves and small fish to feed thousands. In Mark 12:42 He used a widow's small copper coins to teach true giving. In Matthew 17:20 He used a small mustard seed to explain great faith. I often feel like anything I do for His Kingdom is so small, but He is teaching me to never underestimate even the smallest kindness done in His Name.
A couple of months ago a friend of mine was in the hospital. As a very small gesture I took her some lilies to brighten her time while there. She recently told me how God used those flowers more than either one of us could have imagined.
On the oncology floor was a girl in her late twenties dying of cancer. Her family had actually sold lilies to help raise money for her hospital expenses. During her last stay she was talking with her boyfriend who had supported her faithfully throughout the entire ordeal. "Is there anything I can do for you?" she asked him one day. "You have been beside me and done so much for me, yet I really desire to do something, anything that I possibly can for you - even though I am so limited and bedridden. Is there anything I can do for you?" “Yes," he answered, "I want you to marry me today!"
The nurses came to my friend's room, and said, "They are getting married today. Would you share some flowers for her to use during the ceremony?" My friend did not hesitate and pointed to the lilies, "Take those. They will be a perfect wedding bouquet." And they were. One week later the bride passed away, but how sweet to know that those small flowers were part of one of her final acts of kindness and blessing.
What small thing might Jesus use in you and through you today?
Let's pray. Father, thank You for the small things. Please move us forward in extending even the smallest kindnesses that You may use them to bless others and extend Your Kingdom more than we can ask or imagine. In Jesus' Precious Name we pray. Amen.
